You may often hear it said that all electric heating systems are the same as they are all 100% efficient, but try warming a room with a 1 kilowatt heater and then a 1 kilowatt steam iron; both have the same efficiency and both will cost exactly the same to run, but the heater has a much larger surface area.
The larger the surface area, the better the heating and some of our German storage radiators at just 3 feet long, have 15 feet of surface area, but this is only part of the story.
If you have a draught and you just can’t find the source, it may well be caused by an incorrectly sized and placed radiators. This is because cold air is attracted to warm air and that causes the draught. As a rule of thumb, no part of a room should ever be more than 13 feet from the heat source.
Central heating, the best option? Central heating has drawbacks; unless you keep going around the house turning radiators in different rooms on and off during the day, the one thermostat, usually in your hall, is controlling the heat centrally, so the radiators in the bedroom are using up expensive energy when you are in the living room, and a cold miserable bathroom is still cold and miserable when the temperature in the lounge is toasty warm.
Then there is the yearly maintenance cost of central heating, even today’s modern combi boilers are not expected to perform for more than around 5 years and can cost thousands of pounds to replace.

You can arrange for an energy assessment to calculate your uValue by telephoning a local estate agent, they have the contact details for assessors and they can also further advise you on how to increase insulation, often at little or no cost.
The most common question we hear is “What does your system cost to run?” Unlike E7 which has no thermostat control so is relatively easy to calculate, when thermostats are involved, several factors need to be taken into account; they are;
1. The cu/m (volume) of your property.
2. The temperature you want your house to be maintained at.
3. The ambient (outside) temperature.
4. The direction the property faces.
5. The property uValue.
So what is uValue? It is a measurement of the thermal loss through your walls, floor, ceiling and windows. Here in the UK we have overall the worst uValues in western Europe and this alone determines running costs with probably more practical relevance than ALL the other factors. For example, a property with a uValue of 0 theoretically requires no heating whatsoever whereas a property with a typical UK uValue of 3 will require a radiator in every room.
So, is our system cheaper to run than mains gas? The cost of gas is certainly rather lower than electricity and even bearing in mind gas is not a renewable, it appears on the face of it to be cheaper to run even though it’s not going to stay that way. However we’ve been lucky enough to see data that changes everything. When looking at the regular servicing & maintenance along with boiler replacement every 10 years, then things start to change and then when you consider how much heat escapes out the flue and the inefficiency of gas boilers compared to electric then we can certainly make the case. Not only all that, if you rent out a gas heated property there’s annual inspection charges and the new EU regulation on flues for rented properties means it might be far too impractical to consider mains gas. If you are thinking about retro fitting a mains gas system, watch out! The mess involved in fitting hidden pipe-work takes weeks, if not months, to clear up.
So, the poorer your insulation levels are the greater the importance of fitting our radiators!We regularly mail out to our customers a feedback form so we can see how we’re doing and how our radiators are performing – interestingly a very common comment is not how much is being saved but that they are now warm!
